What discounts are available?

Most auto insurance companies have standard discount structures so just look for the one or two that offer additional benefits. The main discounts are set by looking at the level of risk. The more likely it is you will go through the year without making a claim, the bigger the discounts likely to be available.

So, how many years have you gone without a claim? The better your driving record over time, the more likely it is that you will be offered a good discount. The converse is equally true. If you are a newly qualified driver with no experience or one or two accidents in a short time, the rates will be high.

If you only drive a few miles a week on country roads with little traffic, you will be a low risk driver. Now put you on heavily congested roads driving as part of your job, and the chances of an accident go up. Look at the possibility of using public transport for regular commuting or carpooling. Anything you can do to keep down your mileage will bring you savings. In addition, with gas prices approaching $4 per gallon, public transport can save you a lot.

Then reduce the risk of car theft by fitting an alarm, never leaving anything tempting in plain sight and, whenever possible, leaving the car parked in a secure garage. Some insurers offer discounts if you take a defensive driving course. If you are in doubt as to what discounts are available, ask.
